BAYPASS FOR ALL!

In 2023, academic workers at UCSF secured access to the MTC Clipper Baypass pilot program, which provides accessible public transit for everyone. In 2024, UCSF agreed to extend the program. Now it’s time for Berkeley and LBL to follow suit.

Why Berkeley and LBL Workers Need BayPass

Access to BayPass has changed the lives of workers at UCSF and improved conditions in their labs. Workers save money on their commutes, enjoy their lives more, and help UC meet its climate commitments. But many workers at Berkeley and LBL are being left behind.

Academic workers at Berkeley and LBL live all over the Bay and perform critical research, just like their colleagues at UCSF. Some spend as much as $300 to get to work each month. The cost of transit hurts workers’ research productivity, their relationship with their coworkers, and their ability to start families. It also holds Berkeley and LBL back from achieving their climate goals and makes them less competitive relative to peer institutions.

This year, Berkeley and LBL administration have a choice: extend BayPass to their own researchers,  or take a step back on accessibility, competitiveness, productivity, public services, and their climate goals. To make sure they make the right choice, academic workers are sharing their stories and preparing to show their employer how much affordable and accessible transit matters.
