UAW 4811 Statement on Trump Cuts to NIH
Scientific research - and science itself - is under attack. These cuts to the NIH would instantly open a gap of hundreds of millions of dollars in UC’s research budget, halting research on everything from cancer to Alzheimer’s. Together with our colleagues, we are organizing to defend the NIH/NSF funding that supports public research. Last week, hundreds of researchers nationwide made thousands of calls and helped pause the freeze on all federal funding. And on February 19, we will join with fellow researchers across the country for a nationwide Day of Action.
Protecting science means protecting our working conditions. In addition to fighting these cuts, we’re working to make research careers more sustainable. That means fair pay, job security, protections for visa holders, paid family leave, bridge funding, and ending abuse in labs. We are fully committed to protecting scientific research for the public good, and we will oppose any effort to derail the progress we are making towards delivering cures and reducing suffering across the United States.
